Papers, 1682-1926, of the Williams, Chesnut, and Manning families.

Correspondence, bills, receipts, land papers, legal papers, addresses, and other papers of the Chesnut and Manning families reflecting the social and economic life of S.C. and containing much information on political issues, including nullification, secession, Civil War, Reconstruction, etc. By connections of blood and marriage, collection also contains in smaller portions papers of the related Cantey, Hampton, Miller, Richardson, and Williams families, , a kinship group which produced six governors and other prominent statesmen. Majority of papers are of John Lawrence Manning and his immediate family and relate chiefly to business and plantation operations in South Carolina and Louisiana and activities and travels of family members. Persons represented include James Chesnut, Sr.; James Chesnut, Jr.; John Chesnut; Mary Boykin Miller Chesnut; Richard Irvine Manning (1789-1836); Stephen D. Miller; and others. Majority of papers relate to the Manning family and their business, plantation and family affairs. Manuscripts of Richard Irvine Manning (1789-1836) relate sparingly to his service as Governor (1824-1826), and Congressman (1834-1836); letters from Alexander Garden, author of Anecdotes of the Revolutionary War, discuss plans to publish additional Revolutionary material and the of Laurence Manning at the Battle of Eutaw Springs. Laurence Manning was the Governor's father and founder of the family is South Carolina, One letter of Charles Cotesworth Pinkney, 19 Jan. 1795, to Laurence Manning, as Adjutant General, cites his military experience during the Revolution and requests assistance in preparing for publication a manual of military law for the South Carolina militia. Three letters, 1847-1848, from the Governor's wife, Elizabeth Peyre Richardson Manning (whose relation as niece, sister, wife, mother, aunt and grandmother, to six South Carolina governors was featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not) are to her son, John Laurence, and his future wife, Sally Bland Clarke of Virginia.

Lancaster and Sumter District S.C. attorney, plantation owner, and politician. He served in the South Carolina Senate and was governor of the state 1828 to 1830.
